Perspective: The College of Engineering and Computer Science at SU is in a phase of strategic growth under the dynamic leadership of Dean Laura Steinberg. The Department of Biomedical and Chemical Engineering has added five new faculty members in the past four years, including a new chairperson, a chaired professor and three assistant professors. Among other things, this has helped us achieve critical mass and enhanced visibility in the biomaterials area and establish the Syracuse Biomaterials Institute. A search is currently underway to hire an assistant professor with focus on sustainable energy studies. We plan to nucleate and nurture a crosscutting cluster in this area by establishing synergistic partnerships with other colleges within SU and SUNY College of Environmental Science and Forestry. These efforts will make critical contributions towards accomplishing the University’s goal to flourish into an internationally recognized hub of scholarship in the areas of life sciences and sustainable development.
Undergraduate Studies: The Department offers BS programs in bioengineering and chemical engineering. Both of the undergraduate programs are accredited by ABET. The number of undergraduate students has increased significantly in recent years: we had 74 entering students in 2009. The two programs now share courses in engineering science. This allows for the appreciation of the fundamentals in a broader context and promotes interdisciplinary interactions among students. A number of our students gain hands on research experience by participating in faculty research.

Graduate Studies: The Department has a lively graduate student body that consists of
nearly 90 students with one half of them pursuing doctoral degrees. The graduate programs have been revised so that both programs now have 30 credit MS degrees and 42 credit PhD degrees. By lowering the credit requirements, we expect our PhD students to be able to devote more time for their research and thus be able to complete their degrees sooner. Click on

New! Soft Interfaces IGERT @ SU (updated 10/20/2011)
Syracuse University has been awarded $3M by NSF to develop an Integrative Graduate Education and Research Training Program (IGERT) in Soft Interfaces over the next five years. This is an excellent opportunity to train PHD scientists and engineers in the areas of biological membranes, biomaterials and nanostructured interfaces.
